A celebration evening at 11 Downing Street

19 Mar 2025

We were thrilled to host a celebration evening of James Brining's tenure as our Artistic Director at 11 Downing Street!

The Playhouse celebrated an incredible 13 years with a very special evening hosted by Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP.

This special occasion followed the announcement of the departure of our Joint CEO and Artistic Director, James Brining, after his successful 13-year tenure.

“The importance, power, and impact of theatres like Leeds Playhouse are undeniable. Whether it’s a five-year-old experiencing theatre for the first time, an aspiring 20-year-old starting a career, or someone in their 50s enjoying a diverse and safe space, the Playhouse entertains, challenges, celebrates, and fosters empathy and understanding. It’s a truly civic, inclusive space where exceptional art is accessible, and people can connect through art and human contact. The vision of an inclusive, welcoming theatre making world-class work in Leeds has transformed both the theatre and the city. Spaces like the Playhouse are vital in our divided world, needing commitment, advocacy, and support more than ever,” said James

James welcomed friends, family, supporters, and colleagues to the No 11 State Room for an evening that featured captivating performances by Andy Brookes AKA Testament, Jenny Fitzpatrick, and John Hopkins, who all starred in productions directed by James during his time in Leeds. Inspiring addresses were given by Rachel Reeves MP, and Hamida Al Khoder from Leeds Playhouse’s pioneering Theatre of Sanctuary programme.

James also introduced Tom Wright, our new Artistic Director, who will join the Executive team alongside Joint CEO and Executive Director, Shawab Iqbal, who becomes sole CEO when James leaves at the end of April.
