A Lion Walks – Aslan makes a magnificent return to Leeds Playhouse

3 Oct 2024

Excited guests of all ages were excited to meet the majestic Aslan as he returned to Leeds Playhouse ahead of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe opening next month to some already sold out performances.

First staged in 2017 at Leeds Playhouse, the hit production will make a triumphant return to its original home which saw a record breaking box office, set, costume and props created by Leeds Playhouse teams and the Quarry Theatre turned into a theatre in the round for the first time. Since then, the much-loved production has been on a UK tour including a six month run in the West End.

Specially invited guests were treated to a unique costume exhibition showcasing many loveable characters from C.S Lewis’ iconic novel which celebrates its 75th anniversary next year. Guests stepped through the wardrobe, and immediately soaked up the sights and sounds from the world of Narnia as ice cold snow fell and evocative WWII songs were played by a live pianist.

The Associate Director of this forthcoming production, Pip Minnithorpe alongside Set and Costume Designer Tom Paris, shared how the upcoming spectacular is a feast for the whole family to enjoy. In an exclusive look at how the show is being created, guests were able tosee  incredible work by the theatre’s Costume team from The White Witch’s coat, to woodland creatures from across Narnia.

The celebrations continued with a very special performance of the song “When There Was Spring” sung by West End alumni Shaun McCourt as Mr Tumnus accompanied by Oli Grant on  violin and Scott Brooks on piano. Then came the ‘mane’ event – as the noble Aslan, puppeteered by Oli Grant, Shaun McCourt and Sean Lopeman, walked majestically  through the crowds.

Pip Minnithorpe said: “With stunning scenery, lighting design by award-winning Jack Knowles, and imaginative costumes you’ll find yourself lost in the wintry landscape of the White Witch or the vibrant colours of each character they meet along their journey.

“We’re excited to celebrate the unique combination of actor-musicians and the spectacle of flying, puppetry, magic and storytelling to share with audiences something truly special.”

Tom Paris said: Bringing C.S. Lewis’s magical world to life is truly a dream come true. From the icy landscapes of the White Witch’s domain to the warmth of Aslan, every aspect of the set and costume design aims to transport you deeper into this fantastical world.

“We’ve taken inspiration from the book’s vivid imagery and iconic characters, designing costumes that reflect their unique personalities and what excites me the most is how this production will resonate with both those who have read the book and new theatre audiences. We’ve incorporated elements that are visually stunning, ensuring that everyone of all ages will feel the magic of Narnia.”

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe will play in Leeds Playhouse’s Quarry Theatre from Mon 18 Nov 2024 – Sat 25 Jan 2025 ahead of a UK tour.
