A 21st Century Playhouse

A 21st Century Playhouse

With the arrival of John Lewis and Victoria Gate on our doorstep, this area of the city is changing beyond recognition.

New developments for Leeds City College and Leeds College of Music library are already underway, creating a stronger visual identity for Quarry Hill as a cultural quarter – and further developments are planned from 2018.

27 years since it first opened, many parts of our building are now growing tired and inefficient – both in the foyer areas and also backstage. Working with Glasgow-based architects Page\Park we are creating plans to modernise the building and transform familiar spaces into something new.

“The Playhouse is undoubtedly beginning to show its age. We want to be able to welcome people from our region, our country and from across the world to a home of which we are proud.”

– James Brining, Artistic Director

Below are the latest artist’s impressions of the new building designs – these will be updated throughout the redevelopment process so please come back to see the most up-to-date plans.

“It’s tremendously exciting to be working with a practice (Page\Park) who have such a wealth of experience of cultural buildings. We are hugely impressed both by their conceptual ideas, and by how clearly they understand our vision and values, as a vital theatre rooted in our communities as a great artistic beacon for the North.”

– Robin Hawkes, Executive Director
