Theatre-based workshops for younger children

Leeds Playhouse aspires to build and develop long-term partnerships with primary teachers and students through a range of creative opportunities offered at the Playhouse and in schools.

We offer a number of theatre-based workshops for early years and primary school children at both KS1 and KS2, running year-round.

  • Creative Literacy Workshop

Based on any text you are using in the classroom, we offer a workshop that brings literature alive. Using a range of drama techniques to support pupils’ literacy skills, this workshop can be specifically tailored to any age group.

    • EY, KS1 and KS2
    • At the Playhouse or at school
  • Once Upon a Time... (Character in your classroom)

Led by an actor in role as a character from your chosen fairy tale, myth or legend, these practical workshops help to bring the narrative alive for your pupils, and encourage their own imaginative and creative storytelling skills.

    • EY, KS1 and KS2
    • At the Playhouse or at school
  • Exploring Costume

Come and explore Leeds Playhouse’s fantastic Costume Department to learn all about fashion, clothing and costume. This interactive learning adventure will give your pupils unprecedented, exclusive access to our treasure trove of over 10,000 costumes.

    • KS1 and KS2
    • At the Playhouse or at school
  • Backstage Tours

Led by our Creative Engagement Team, tours can be tailored to any group. We will take you behind the scenes of the Playhouse to learn more about working in a theatre and share the secrets of how productions make it from page to stage.

    • KS2
    • At the Playhouse only
  • A Play in a Day

Bring your classroom to life for a day with our wholly interactive Play in a Day workshop. Pupils explore a well-known story or topic, and a variety of techniques and styles, before bringing it all together for a performance.

    • KS2
    • At the Playhouse or at school

  • Primary Players

Now in its fifth year, this exciting in-depth project offers primary schools the opportunity to work with us in partnership throughout the spring/summer term towards a full-scale collaborative Shakespeare production at Leeds Playhouse in June 2018. The programme includes six in-school artist-led Shakespeare workshops and rehearsals for your students, alongside tailored provision for teaching of Shakespeare in your curriculum, plus exclusive CPD for teaching and support staff.

School prices vary according to each production, and the range is listed on each web page. To help you manage your visit we offer one FREE staff seat for every nine students booked. Schools tickets are only available in limited numbers and for Monday to Friday. You are still welcome to book once this limit is reached, but the standard discount rates will apply.

Age Recommendation

Age Recommendation is assessed according to the complexity and sensitivity of issues, images, sexual references and strength of language used in both Leeds Playhouse Productions and Touring Productions. Any sensitive content is highlighted in our main brochure, but we do encourage schools to call our box office with any specific concerns or questions regarding sensitive material in the productions.

Take note…

We strongly discourage students from taking notes during performances at Leeds Playhouse. Please encourage your students to fully enjoy their theatre experience by focusing completely on the action on stage. They can then jot down any notes immediately after the performance.
