A revolutionary two-week takeover where older people perform, exhibit and express their stories of lives lived to the fullest.
Join us for a celebration of older people’s vast creativity, shared through passionate and unexpected performances, exhibitions, music, dance and more across Leeds Playhouse. Everyone is welcome at our ground-breaking celebration of age and ageing.
1001 Stories is a collaboration between The Performance Ensemble, Leeds Playhouse, Leeds Museums and Galleries and Leeds Older People’s Forum for LEEDS 2023.
If you would like a day pass to the 1001 Stories Front of House Takeover activities, you can book in advance here. Sign up for free events at the Playhouse when you arrive.

Get involved
We’re collecting 1001 stories from Leeds’s older community, creating a catalogue of funny, touching and inspiring moments from across the city.
If you’re over 60 with a connection to Leeds, tell us your story, anecdote or milestone memory. Your story does not have to be a long one; if it is true and means something to you, then we want to hear it.
Your story will form an essential part of the 1001 Stories Festival. It will be displayed as part of a large online archive of the stories of the people of Leeds and it will inform creative work that will take place as part of our festival.
Want to get inspired? See the stories so far.
We’ve created a guidance booklet on how to share your story.
