Join us on Wed 19 June to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Leeds Playhouse becoming the world’s first Theatre of Sanctuary. Over the last decade, we’ve been privileged to meet and work with hundreds of people from the refugee and asylum-seeking community in Leeds. Offering safety, hospitality and support as we connect through the power of creativity.
As part of Refugee Week 2024, we are hosting a range of activities, workshops and sharings, including a celebratory Gala evening of performances by our participants, partner organisations and professional artists.
The Gala will feature Asmarina Voices women’s choir, our original Theatre of Sanctuary project which helped shape our initial application for our Sanctuary status. They will be joined on stage, by Harmony Choir and Headingly Voices Choir.
Our Hearts Youth Group will be performing an original drumming piece, the founder of the City of Sanctuary movement Rev Dr Inderjit Singh Bhogal OBE, the Eritrean Cultural Dancers; plus many more surprise guests.
Following the performances, we will be hosting an open mic event on our level 2 bar & kitchen, with more performances and sharings from the Sanctuary’s Got Talent team!
The Playhouse does not make any money through our Theatre of Sanctuary work but we recognise the importance of art and creative opportunities to empower and enrich the lives of refugees and people seeking asylum. We need the help of our wonderful community to ensure we can continue our work as a Theatre of Sanctuary for another ten years and more. A specific Theatre of Sanctuary fund has been set up to enable us Please will you make a donation to support this vital work.
If finance is a barrier to you attending this event, please email connect@leedsplayhouse.org.uk
Theatre of Sanctuary Fund
Leeds Playhouse is the world's first Theatre of Sanctuary and over the last decade, we’ve opened our doors and our hearts to refugees and people seeking asylum, offering safety and support as we connect through the power of creativity. We recognise the strength and empowerment that can be found though artistic expression and the value of these enriching experiences for our participants and hope to continue this vital work long into the future.
