More Information on Alan Bennett: A Life In Writing (2016)

“I seem to have banged on this year rather more than usual. I make no apology for that, nor am I nervous that it will it make a jot of difference. I shall still be thought to be kindly, cosy and essentially harmless. I am in the pigeon-hole marked ‘no threat’ and did I stab Judi Dench with a pitchfork I should still be a teddy bear.”

Alan Bennett is one of our most celebrated writers, and author of much-loved plays including The Lady in the Van, The Madness of King George and The History Boys. During a prolific career spanning over 50 years, he has written more than 20 stage plays, 13 films, and 50 TV plays, for which he has won numerous awards, including BAFTAs, Laurence Olivier Awards and Evening Standard Awards. This autumn he will publish his third collection of prose, Keeping on Keeping On, following Writing Home and Untold Stories. The book contains his diaries from 2005 to 2015, covering a decade that saw the films of The History Boys and The Lady in the Van, as well as four premieres at the National Theatre. He will talk to the Guardian’s Charlotte Higgins about his extraordinary career in stage, television and literature.
