Be careful what you wish for…

In Sondheim’s classic musical, well-known fairy tale characters collide, but for Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and Red Riding Hood, together with a childless baker and his wife, ‘Happily Ever After’ turns out to be far from the end of the story.

Whilst all the elements are there – a slipper as pure as gold, hair as yellow as corn, magic beans and of course the curse of a witch – this is no conventional fairy tale. The familiar find themselves in very unfamiliar circumstances in this darkly comic tale.

A recent movie hit starring Meryl Streep, Sondheim’s revered wit and intelligence unite Opera North and West Yorkshire Playhouse in their first major collaboration. Featuring the singers of Opera North and directed by the Playhouse’s Artistic Director James Brining, prepare for a performance that is far more than ‘Once upon a time’.

Special pre-performance event on Tue 21 June:
West Yorkshire Playhouse, Congreve Room, 6pm – 6.45pm, FREE

Join Musical Director Jim Holmes, cast member Jeremy Peaker and Opera North’s Chorus Manager Steven Phillips for a unique insider view of West Yorkshire Playhouse and Opera North’s critically acclaimed new production of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods.
