Unlocked! Live demo session in the theatre
Join director James Brining and members of the cast and crew as they discuss the creative decisions involved in adapting this Ibsen classic for the modern world with live demonstrations and explorations of key moments from the production.
Unlocked! events are an exciting, new opportunity for our audiences to see more of what goes on behind the scenes of some of our biggest and most spectacular shows. The Playhouse opens up its theatres, and invites you to witness creative discussions that illuminate the processes and decisions that are integral to bringing a show to life, and to ask some questions of your own too.
In (the fall of) The Master Builder Unlocked! we will examine exactly how and in what ways the text changed to become this fresh and frenetic reimagining by Zinnie Harris, and what aspects of the play have been emphasised and highlighted by the modern setting. Fans of Ibsen’s work will enjoy the exploration of his ideas and the autobiographical nature of the original, whilst artists will relish in the conversations about the claustrophobic set design and the challenge faced by our Associate Artist Reece Dinsdale to portray the enigmatic yet troubled Halvard Solness. As an event that is open to anyone, (the fall of) The Master Builder Unlocked! will bring something new to students and seasoned theatregoers alike.
Led by our Creative Engagement team, Unlocked! events bring our audiences even closer to the world and work of the Playhouse, and are about education, enrichment and enjoyment.
Keep your eyes peeled for other Unlocked! events throughout the year, such as The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Unlocked! on Tuesday 16th January 2018, when we’ll peek through the wardrobe into the land of Narnia in the transformed Quarry Theatre.
A signed performance is the usual full production using either the creative use of sign integrated into the performance or a British Sign Language Interpreter on stage interpreting the show for D/deaf attendees.Audio Described
Audio Described performances are designed to improve the experience of visually impaired and blind attendees. As well as listening to the dialogue on stage the customer can wear a headset and listen to a live description of the action on stage.Relaxed Performance
A relaxed performance is a specially selected show from our programme, with slight adaptations to make it suitable for an audience of young people or adults with learning disabilities. This may include extra lighting, additional wheelchair spaces and the freedom to move to alternative seating if required.Dementia-Friendly Performance
Dementia friendly performances are for all audiences. The theatre experience is enhanced for people living with dementia and their supporters, with adaptations to front of house service, the show and pre-show information packs. Additional dementia-aware staff, quiet spaces, clear signage and visual markers, sound and lighting adjustments and flexible seating options all help to create a supportive, shared experience.Sing Along

Parent & Baby Performance
A Parent and Baby performance enables parents to attend the theatre with their baby (under 12 months). We make small adaptations to the lighting and sound effects, including keeping the auditorium lights slightly raised. The seating is unallocated and there is a relaxed attitude to noise.
*A transaction fee of £2.50 will be applied to all phone and internet bookings.
