Exciting callout for communities to perform as part of Open Season

26 Nov 2024

Are YOU ready to perform at Leeds Playhouse?

Open Season is our annual celebration of community creativity. The 2025 festival, which runs from 26 June to 19 July, is an exciting opportunity for individual performers and performance groups from across the Leeds City Region to act, sing, dance – or all three! – at one of the most prestigious regional theatres in the country.

The Open Season theme for 2025 is A Leeds United, inspired by Through it All Together, a new play by Leeds playwright Chris O’Connor commissioned by the Playhouse as part of its Spring/Summer 2025 season. A love letter to former Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa, the beautiful game and the bond that unites families and friends, the play will enjoy its world premiere in our Courtyard theatre from 23 June to 19 July 2025.

Open Season will run at the same time, with performances in our epic Quarry theatre, Bramall Rock Void studio space and the Level 2 Bar/Kitchen.

“Performers can interpret the theme in whatever way they like. It’s just a jumping off point for their creativity,” said Lily Craig, Creative Communities Producer at the Playhouse. “We can’t wait to see the amazing performances it inspires – and to meet the community creatives who will be bringing their talents to our stages.”

You don’t just have to be a performer to take part in Open Season. Community-led events, such as open mic sessions, celebrations, exhibitions and kitchen takeovers are also welcome additions to the programme, making it a festival that everyone can get involved in.

Performers and event organisers need to tell the Playhouse about their idea by filling in this form. The deadline is 31 January 2025 and everyone will be informed by 1 March if their performance is going to be part of the Open Season programme.

“In the first instance, all you need is a great idea,” said Lily. “We will read everyone’s proposal and will then come back to them with the space and dates available. We’re going to include as many local performers and groups as we can – so why not give it a go?”

If you would like to apply for a spot at Open Season but would like more guidance, we are hosting two information sessions: in-person on Friday 10 January from 3-4pm; and online on Wednesday 15 January from 11.30am-12.30pm. Email connect@leedsplayhouse.org.uk to book your place.
