Intensive training for directors

The Leeds Playhouse has been supporting directors in their development since the early days of the company.

Now one of the most established elements of our artist development offer, we provide a wide range of intensive training for directors at all stages of their careers, especially those living in and around our city.

When we have vacancies for Trainee Directors, we’ll list them on our jobs page. You can also join the Furnace Social Club to receive email updates.

“The Playhouse was an amazing place to first discover the world of professional theatre. It was an inspiring melting pot of both national and local talent and I was so fortunate to be able to train in a building that produced such a diverse portfolio of work with so many brilliant artists and collaborators. It really is a theatre that the people of Leeds and beyond truly treasure.”

– Justin Audibert, Artistic Director, Unicorn Theatre – Trainee Director  (Birkbeck) 2007-2008

“My time at the  Playhouse shaped me as an artist and as a person. I learned a stupendous amount from the enormous variety of people who come through those doors, who work and play in those extraordinary spaces. My heart lifts a tiny bit just walking into the foyer – to have been able to make work there was a privilege I’ll be eternally grateful for.”

– Sarah Punshon, Artistic Director, The Dukes Lancaster – Trainee Director  (RTYDS) 2003-2005
