Leeds Playhouse is looking for a Jerwood Scenic Workshop Trainee to join us for three months from late January to April 2025.

We are delighted to have the support of the Jerwood Developing Artists Fund to continue our development of designers and backstage workers. This is a wide-ranging opportunity to be part of the Scenic Workshop team.

You will be an artist in the earlier stages of your career who is interested in developing specialist skills in scenic art, construction, technical drawing and/or props making. You will be imaginative, hands on and a good collaborator, interested in being an enabler and realiser of other people’s ideas.

You will be interested in a wide-ranging opportunity – to work in and learn from a large building-based theatre organisation across a range of specialisms within our Scenic Workshop.

You will be generous spirited, hard-working, creative and curious. You will be flexible and open to making the most of all the opportunities that may arise throughout the placement

You will share the ethos of Leeds Playhouse that art should be accessible to and inclusive of everyone.

You will be based in West Yorkshire and the Leeds City Region. This is because Leeds Playhouse are committed to nurturing our local ecology, so even if you are happy to commute from further afield, you are not eligible to apply for this role.

This is a freelance contract of 35 hours per week for 3 months. Whilst normal working hours will be Monday to Friday 9:30am-5:30pm, this role will require flexibility with some evening and weekend work required. You will receive a total fee of £5,000.

We actively encourage people from a variety of backgrounds with different experiences, skills, and stories to join us and influence and develop the future of the Playhouse.

Please read our recruitment pack below for more information on the role and full instructions on how to apply.

The closing date for applications is 10am Monday 2 December 2024.
First round of interviews to be scheduled for week commencing 9 December.
Second round of interviews (practical workshop session) to be scheduled for week commencing 16 December.
