Airplays nominated for an O2 Media Award
Airplays, a collaborative project by BBC Radio Leeds, Leeds Playhouse and Leeds College of Music, has been nominated for an O2 Media Award for Yorkshire and the Humber. The awards acknowledge the wealth of creative talent within the region and highlight exceptional individuals and groups for their distinguished media contributions.
Created in October 2018, Airplays was a new initiative aiming to put radio drama centre stage. The project presented four short radio plays exploring the theme of migration to mark the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush in 1948.
Chosen from an open call out, the plays were performed live on stage at Leeds College of Music and broadcast across BBC Radio Leeds.
The four dramas were written by Yorkshire based writers Gemma Bedeau, Chris O’Connor, Emma Barnes and Kamal Kaan. The plays were selected by a panel of judges from Leeds Playhouse, BBC Radio Leeds and the Playhouse’s Theatre of Sanctuary programme for refugees and asylum seekers.
Directed by Bradford based Kash Arshad, currently Trainee Artistic Director at Freedom Studios in Bradford, and with Stefan Escreet (Partition, Leeds Playhouse) as Radio Drama Consultant, the Airplays cast include Chris Jack (The Secret Garden, York Theatre Royal); Alyce Liburd (Alia’s Chronicles, Wrongsemble); Philip D McQuillan (When We Were Brothers, Freedom Studios/Bolton Octogon); Flo Wilson (Talking Heads, Leeds Playhouse) and Leeds Playhouse Ensemble company members Elexi Walker (Road, Romeo & Juliet, Leeds Playhouse) and Susan Twist (Be My Baby, Hamlet, Road, Leeds Playhouse, Gaslight, Bolton Octogon). The productions featured music created and performed by Leeds College of Music alumni Lara Jones, Mikey Sluman and Daniel Large.
Airplays is nominated in the O2 awards Entertainment Programme’ category. Winners will be revealed on 4 July at a presentation evening taking place at Leeds Football Club, hosted by BBC Breakfast’s Louise Minchin.
