A 3-day intensive for directors with Sameena Hussain

Are you a theatre director at any stage of your career? Would you like kindness to be a fundamental part of your directing practice? Are you aged over 18 and based in West Yorkshire?

In December, we will be hosting a three-day residency for directors looking to develop their practice, build teams, create work and communicate ethos with kindness at the core.

This FREE 3-day intensive will explore:

  • The benefits of using kindness in your work;
  • How does kindness meet your skillset;
  • The tools you can employ to embed kindness into your directing practice;
  • How you can hold a kind space for others whilst being kind to yourself;
  • What the impact of kindness can be in the process of creating art.

The intensive will be led by Leeds Playhouse’s Associate Director Sameena Hussain, a director and facilitator whose work is rooted in community, play and endeavouring to remove barriers (invisible and visible) which prevent people from engaging with theatre. Sameena is passionate about making theatre a safe and brave space, enabling dialogue and connection; a place to build a community and for it to thrive.

More Information

This course is for directors at any stage of your career – you might be just starting out, early career or established.

Artists will be invited to talk, share, take part in practical exercises, acknowledge the power they have in a creative process and be kind with themselves and fellow artists.

You must be over 18 years of age.

You must be based in West Yorkshire and the Leeds City Region. This is because Leeds Playhouse is committed to nurturing our local ecology, so even if you are happy to commute from further afield, you are not eligible to apply for this residency.

There are a maximum of 12 places available on this course.

If demand for places is high, we will prioritise artists who are from communities consistently under-represented in UK theatre. This may be because of barriers arising from ethnicity, socio-economics, sexuality, gender, having caring responsibilities, and being deaf and/or disabled. Looking at this list, feel free to share with us any ways in which you might fit these criteria.

To apply please complete this form: https://forms.office.com/e/UZG6EeUMnY

If you would prefer to submit your answers via a BSL video or audio recording, please email them to lindaray.ndlovu@leedsplayhouse.org.uk

The deadline for applications is 10am, Monday 11 November.

We’ll let you know if you have a place on the course by 6pm, Monday 18 November.

If you have any questions about the course or your application, please contact lindaray.ndlovu@leedsplayhouse.org.uk.

There will be a note taker in the room. Please let us know if there’s anything else we can provide to make the intensive accessible for you.
